Sentenced to death: the vessel hid, the prisoner survived the fateful day

In 1999, the US judicial system in Alabama sentenced triple murderer Alan Miller to death. On Thursday, after 23 years in prison, he saw the day of execution of his death sentence, but he survived it. The execution team did not manage to find his vein until almost midnight. Since they failed to start the process on time, it was postponed.

But it is even more unusual that it should Alan Miller in 2018, when the alternative method of execution by nitrogen hypoxia was introduced, he applied for execution by the latter rather than by lethal injection, as he is afraid of needles. But according to his lawyers, the documentation with the application was lost, and the deadline for submitting it had expired. His request to be executed by any other means was then specifically blocked by a judge on Tuesday, although he found that Miller’s request “probably submitted within the statutory deadline”. A needle was waiting for Miller.

On Thursday, however, it got complicated again. The planned execution had to be canceled at 11:30 p.m., half an hour before the court order expired. “We could not start the process in time,” said the Alabama Commissioner of Corrections John Hamm. The execution was delayed because the execution team was unable to find Alan’s vein. Although they started with attempts to establish a different access to the convict’s vein, which then had to be confirmed by the court, they later estimated that they would not be able to carry out the sentence within the statutory deadline and put it down.
