On Saturday, the traditional lying down competition started in Montenegro, which makes Montenegro unique in Europe. The unusual competition is being organized for the eleventh year in a row, and nine competitors from Podgorica, Danilovgrad and Belgrade will try to break the record of 117 hours lying down this year.

Lying under the canopy of a hundred-year-old maple in the ethnic village “Montenegro” not far from Nikšić, the contestants can eat, drink, read books and use various devices such as laptops and telephones. They are allowed to do almost anything except stand up.

Last year, the rules were further changed, so that the contestants have the opportunity to go to the toilet every eight hours, reports RTL.

This year’s competition is also special in that family members will be able to join the competitors and keep them company during the competition. Žarko Pejanović he came from Podgorica to the competition with his wife and sister, reports the portal News. “It’s hot in Podgorica, I haven’t slept well the last few days, so I came to get some sleep. It’s great here,” said Pejanović.

Last year’s record for lying down was 117 hours, which is a little less than five days. More precisely, it is four days and 21 hours. The winner will receive 350 euros, rafting, a weekend break in an ethnic village, lunch for two at a restaurant in Podgorica and many other prizes from sponsors.

Montenegrins are often associated with laziness, which usually accompanies them in jokes.
