“Putin is closer to Hitler than to communists”

--

Putin’s Russia is the closest to fascism since Hitler’s Germany and Mussolini’s Italy, American philosopher and expert on fascist regimes Jason Stanley believes.

“Fascist parties and movements exist always and everywhere. The question is whether the government creates the conditions for their decisive influence. To the Russian President to Vladimir Putin it succeeded,” said a professor at the American Yale University in an interview with the Ukrainian online media Babel Jason Stanley.

Stanley, who gave a lecture on fascism and imperialism to Ukrainian students in Kiev this August, explained that the only difference between the fascism of Nazi Germany and the fascism of Putin’s Russia is that in Nazi Germany everything was based on race, while the two were the basis of Russian fascism language and culture. “And now we know that linguistic and cultural nationalism can also lead to genocide,” he added.

Jason Stanley on the war in Ukraine:

When asked by a Ukrainian journalist if it is not ironic that the Russians, who were once rightly considered the victors over fascism and who now practice fascism, call their war “anti-fascist”, Stanley replied that one should pay attention not to words, but to ideology.

“Putin can say that he is a liberator — but he is closer to Hitler than Brezhnev (one of the leaders of the Soviet Union, op. p.), closer to the Russian Tsar Peter the Great as communists. And this is an important argument in favor of why the Russians should not be allowed even a piece of Ukrainian land. For the same reasons that made it impossible to leave Warsaw, for example, under the Nazis.”

According to Stanley, Putin is now talking about the Ukrainians like Hitler was talking about the Jews. “He says that there can be no Ukrainians and that all Ukrainians are actually Russians. This means that he will get rid of everyone who speaks the Ukrainian language. That is why all this delusion of the West about Ukrainian territorial concessions to Russia must end,” he said, among other things in the interview.
