An unemployed single mother transforms into a legal assistant and almost single-handedly sweeps the power plant, which is blamed for polluting the city’s water supply.

When the story begins, Erin is penniless and jobless. Desperate, she asks lawyer Ed Masry to hire her at his firm. Thus, Erin comes across an example of a conspiracy, which was used to cover up the fact that in a certain city, due to polluted water, residents became seriously ill, and some even died. Although people are initially reluctant to cooperate, Erin’s persistence just gets them to listen to her. He brings a lawsuit on their behalf against a polluting corporation and obtains a record settlement.

Julia Roberts won an Oscar for her portrayal of the title character.
