In most cases, an automotive journalist sees and tests most of what is or still is being driven on our roads. I’m not bragging about this, on the contrary – for us journalists, who do our work for a long time, every car is just an object that needs to be tested, presented and evaluated.
In most cases, a car is just a car. For a general assessment, this is the best, but the memory of the beginnings, when the heart beat faster with each new car, I admit, is not bad.
Alfa still elicits emotion from the driver
We now live in times when the pulse is rarely elevated. Really powerful engines are almost gone, and the shapes of the cars are all too similar within the concerns. There are still exceptions. At least those older drivers know that there is something special about the Italian Alfa. Maybe young people only know ironic jokes, but in the past, Alfa was the concept of sportiness and elegance. There are not many Alfa models today, so each new one triggers certain emotions. Alpha is still Alpha. The design is sophisticated and different, and even if it is based on another car, the Italians still know how to make a beautiful car. And the colors are also special, do the four-wheel sheet metal stand out from the gray on the road?
The mild hybrid is capable of some dynamics
Inside, too, the tones are real Alfa. Pleasant lines, excellent ergonomics and a steering wheel that is a pleasure to turn. The shift paddles are bulky, always reachable even in a corner, but because of them, the lever for controlling the wipers is more difficult to reach. In the age of full electrification, Alfa commendably did not take the same route. Although the screen is completely new, large and transparent, and also reliably functional, they still kept the most important buttons or switches.
The test Alfa was equipped with a base 1.5-litre mild hybrid petrol engine offering 96kW. Given the fact that the car weighs a ton and 600 kilograms, there is not a lot of power, so the engine does not like dynamic driving, it prefers a leisurely cruise. To calm the fear – the tone can of course also be dynamic, within the framework of driving a medium-sized crossover.
