It’s official: the next Volvo model has a new name

The successor to the Volvo XC90 will be called EX90, it will have an electric drive and very advanced safety systems. It will also be the first Volvo with a LiDAR system.

The new car was confirmed by Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo. Rowan has officially confirmed both the name of the EX90 and the full reveal date. Many more details about this new model will be revealed at Volvo on November 9.

LiDAR sensor on the roof of the car

In addition to the electric drive, Rowan highlighted the safety aspect of the car. The EX90 will have a built-in LiDAR sensor, along with eight cameras, five radars and 16 ultrasonic sensors. The LiDAR sensor will be mounted on the roof of the car and will be able to detect pedestrians from a distance of up to 250 meters.

Unlike a camera, such a sensor does not depend on light, so it should work equally well both during the day and at night. Volvo predicts that the new set of safety assistance systems will reduce serious traffic accidents by 20 percent and improve collision avoidance by nine percent.

In addition, a car with two cameras inside the vehicle will pay much more attention to the psychophysical state of the driver. If the cameras detect that the driver is tired or losing concentration on driving, the vehicle will warn him with increasingly loud beeps.
