The organizers rated the 19th stage of the Giro with five stars on a five-star scale, which is quite telling. Without a doubt, without exaggeration, another very difficult day awaits the caravan. On the route between the town of Langarone and the final ascent of the Tre Cime Di Lavaredo (Three Peaks of Lavaredo) above the panoramic Lake Misurina, they will cover 183 kilometers and climb over 5,400 meters of altitude, concentrated in as many as five consecutive ascents distributed in the Italian Dolomites, which they won’t let the cyclists breathe. A total of 43 kilometers uphill.
Profile of the 19th stage of the Tour of Italy:
The sports director of Jumbo-Visme hopes that Thomas will break
“Get time vs Geraint Thomas is the goal. We will continue to try to attack. Thomas has shown that he is very strong and in good shape, but only a moment of weakness is needed to break him,” the sports director of Jumbo-Visma is convinced Marc Reef.
“Primož continues on his way. He rode very well yesterday, thanks to a strong team, especially Sepp Kuss. It was very important on the steep slope and especially after. Nice to see we got some time compared to Joao Almeida,” Reef touched on Thursday.
Then he looked towards today’s royal stage: “We took some time back, which is very important from a psychological point of view. After a few difficult weeks, we can look forward to today’s stage with optimism. Primož is one of the strongest cyclists in the race, which he showed. Yesterday put pressure on everyone else, and then we have to wait for the rival’s weak moment. We have to fight, which gives us optimism before today’s stage and tomorrow’s time trial,” said Reef.
Cyclists will first climb the Campolongo pass, followed by the Valparola, Giau and Tre Croci passes and then, for the climax, the final climb to the Tre Cime Di Lavaredo or. to the refuge of Auronzo. The organizers ensure that the roads are quite wide and in excellent condition, with some well-lit tunnels in the first part of the route.
The road will begin to rise right from the start and the incline will hardly let up until the finish line. The top of the first mountain goal of the 19th stage, Passo Campolongo pass (3.9 km, 7% average gradient, ascent cat. 2) at an altitude of 1,875 meters, the cyclists will reach at the 87th kilometer of the route.
Next is the Passo Valparola pass (category 1) at an altitude of 2,196 meters. Cyclists are waiting for a 14-kilometer-long slope with an average gradient of 5.6%, in the last part the gradient will also be 14%.
At kilometer 143, riders will reach the top of Passo Giau (2,236 m), which is also rated as a category 1 slope (14 km, 5.6% average gradient, maximum 12%), at kilometer 169 the top of the pass Passo Tre Croci (1,805), which is rated as a category 2 slope (7.9 km, 7.2% average gradient, maximum 12%).
The highlight of the day is the final climb to Tre Cime Di Lavaredo (7.2 km, 7.6% gradient), which consists of two parts (twice the slope will reach as much as 18% gradient), where the highest point will also be of this year’s Giro (2,304 meters). The last four kilometers will be brutal, where the average gradient will double, and the hardest part will have a gradient of more than 18%.
In the first dolomite stage, the conditions at the summit were a bit mixed up. Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) who attacked in the last kilometers of the race yesterday and shook off Joao Almeida (UAE Emirates), advanced to 2nd place overall in the race. To the pink T-shirt, which she resolutely defends Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) separates him by 29 seconds, and has a ten-second advantage over Almeida, who slipped to third place. The differences still allow for a complete reversal. Let’s not forget, on Saturday, the mountain time trial on Svete Višare awaits the cyclists, which will enthrone the winner of this year’s Giro.
