An intact burial cave approximately 3,300 years old has been accidentally discovered in Israel. A burial cave from the time of the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II. contains dozens of ancient objects. It was discovered in the Palmahim National Park near the Mediterranean Sea, according to the German news agency dpa, the antiquities office announced.

The cave was discovered by an excavator during construction work and, according to the office, is accessible for the first time since it was sealed at the time of Ramesses II.

A major discovery near the coast of Israel

The scientists descended into a “stunning space that seems to have stood still in time” and found a carved square-shaped cave with a central support pillar. “Several dozen intact ceramic and bronze artefacts lay in the cave, exactly as they were arranged in the funeral ceremony,” the office explained.

Pottery, cooking vessels, storage vessels, and arrowheads and spearheads were found among the objects lying on the ground.

As explained in the office, the containers were funeral offerings that accompanied the deceased in the belief that they would serve him in the afterlife.

Israel Antiquities Authority Archaeologist Eli Jannai described the find as a once-in-a-lifetime discovery that made him feel like he was on the set of an Indiana Jones movie.

Scientists believe that the chamber could provide a comprehensive picture of burial customs in the Late Bronze Age.
