Arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist accommodation facilities in August this year were slightly less than 857,000. They created 2.34 million overnight stays, which was half as much as last year and two percent more than in the same period before the epidemic. Foreign tourists accounted for 77 percent of all tourist overnight stays in August. Most of them were Germans – more than half a million, or 22 percent of the total. There were also many tourists from the Netherlands, Italy, France, the Czech Republic and Austria.

Domestic tourists accounted for 23 percent of all overnight stays in August. Tourist accommodation facilities reported slightly less than 196,000 arrivals and almost 698,000 overnight stays, which is half less than in the same month of the previous year, when residents of Slovenia could use tourist vouchers. Domestic overnight stays were still nine percent more than in August 2019.

In August, a total of 1.05 million tourist arrivals were counted in tourist accommodation establishments, which was 3.1 percent more than the same month last year. The number of tourist overnight stays was a record – as many as 3.03 million. In the first eight months of the year, the number of overnight stays has already exceeded the whole of last year.

The number of overnight stays increased the most in Ljubljana

Foreign tourists stayed most often in the municipality of Ljubljana, in the capital they accounted for 98 percent of all overnight stays, while domestic tourists stayed in the municipality of Piran. This was also the municipality with the most tourist overnight stays. In August, however, there were the most overnight stays, 38 percent, in accommodation facilities in mountain municipalities – the municipality of Bled had the largest share of them. A fifth of overnight stays were in seaside municipalities, and 15 percent in spas.

Among the types of municipalities, compared to the same month last year, the number of overnight stays increased the most in Ljubljana, by 57 percent. The biggest decrease was in spa municipalities, by 16 percent. In the eighth month of this year, domestic and foreign tourists spent the most nights in hotels – almost 915,000 overnight stays, or 30 percent of the total. Private rooms, apartments and houses followed with four percent less, and campsites with 24 percent of the total.

From the beginning of January to the end of August, around 4.34 million tourists visited Slovenia. There were 11.72 million overnight stays, which is more than in the entire year 2021. Domestic tourists generated 4.2 million overnight stays – 11 percent more than in the same period last year – and foreign tourists 7.53 million, which is as much as 138 percent more than a year earlier.
