The pop star spoke for the first time about the end of her ten-year relationship with soccer player Gerard Pique, with whom she has two sons.
“It’s hard to talk about, especially because I’m still getting over it, because I’m in the public eye, and because our breakup isn’t like any other breakup,” she said. Shakira about breaking up with Gerard Pique stated in an interview with Elle magazine, “It’s not only difficult for me, but also for my children. Extremely difficult.”
“I try to protect them from that,” she said of her sons Sasha and Milan“but then they hear things from their friends at school or see something unpleasant online and it affects them.”
“Sometimes I think it’s all just a bad dream and that I’ll wake up at some point. But no, it’s true,” she added, “this is probably the darkest period in my life. When I dream that I kept the family together, they’re falling apart, it’s one of the biggest pains you can experience.”
“But women are resilient, we have a natural resilience in us and we are meant to take care of everyone who depends on us,” Shakira said, “so I remind myself to be a role model for my children, to be what they need and what I want them to become.”

She also said that after her sons started going to school, she made a difficult decision and decided to take a break from her career. “Gerard wanted to play, win laurels and I had to support him,” said the singer, who is now returning to the music scene and will release a new album after five years. As she hinted, the songs on it were also inspired by her breakup with Pique.
